The Eastern Shore Small Business Tech Report, 2026
We searched the way an owner on the Shore would, for a website, an AI receptionist, automation, missed-call text-back and review requests, and measured every page that came up the same morning: Google’s own phone test and eight checks a search engine reads. 29 pages from the firms that sell those things here, beside 10 of our own. We do not name the other firms.
Five findings.
- 0158.5
The middle page scored 58.5 of 100 on Google’s own phone test. Four of 28 reached 90, where Google’s green begins.
- 0220 of 28
Twenty of 28 pages took longer than four seconds to show their main content on a phone, the line Google calls poor. Eleven took longer than ten.
- 0311 of 29
Eleven of 29 pages carry FAQ markup: the questions and answers, written so search engines and AI assistants can read them directly.
- 0418 of 29
Eighteen of 29 pages have a phone number you can tap. On a phone, the rest make a customer copy the number by hand.

Of 822 images, 477 carry a description for screen readers and search. The rest are blank to both.

How long a phone waits.
Each line is one page, drawn for as long as a phone waited to see its main content. Google calls anything past four seconds poor.
The checks a search engine reads.
The same eight checks on every page. Where ours fall short, the row says so.
Our 10: nine pages of the site we run today and the new home page on its preview. The rebuilt product and trade pages, measured the same way the same day, scored 97 to 100.
Who reads a site now
We count the machines that read ours.
When someone asks an AI assistant for a business on the Shore, the assistant reads websites to answer. We keep the count for our own site, from our own server log, Bing’s AI report and Google Analytics.

What it means for an owner.
A slow page loses the call before it rings.
The middle page here made a phone wait 8.95 seconds. A customer standing in a parking lot does not wait; they tap the next name. We run this same test on our clients’ sites every week.
Websites that loadWrite the answers where machines can read them.
FAQ and local business markup tell Google, Bing and the AI assistants exactly what you do, where, and when you are open. It is a small piece of work, and 18 of these 29 pages skipped the FAQ part.
The questions owners ask usA number you can tap is half of it.
The other half is someone picking up. The call that goes to voicemail after all that work is the most expensive call there is.
The phone, answeredThe assistants read what search engines read.
The federal government now calls it Super Intelligence, or SI. The assistants behind it read fast pages, plain answers and the markup above, then send people to the businesses they can understand.
What we build
How we measured.
So anyone can check it.
- When
- September 30, 2026, in one morning read, so every page met the same test on the same day.
- The searches
- “web design Easton MD”, “web design Eastern Shore Maryland”, “AI receptionist Maryland small business”, “AI automation agency Maryland”, “missed call text back Maryland”, “Google review automation Maryland”.
- The pages
- Every page that came up for each search in a web search that morning. The order they came up in is not a measured rank. A page that came up twice is counted once.
- Phone speed
- Google PageSpeed Insights, mobile performance score and Largest Contentful Paint, one run per page. One page could not be measured by PageSpeed and is left out of those two measures. One page did not load and is left out entirely.
- The checks
- Read from each page’s own code: the headline, the structured markup, the images and their descriptions, a tap-to-call link, and whether Maryland is named.
- Ours
- Nine pages of the site we run today and the new home page on its preview: every page of ours that came up.
- Names
- We do not name the other firms. Every one of them is a business like yours, and a page is a moment, not a verdict.
